About Friends of South Georgia Island

South Georgia is a mountainous, remote island in the South Atlantic known for its mind-blowing wildlife experiences and scenery, easily accessible on the shoreline! It is 100 miles long and at most 40 miles wide! Beaches full of hundreds of thousands of penguins, and four species of nesting albatross – including the Wandering Albatross with a 12 ft/4 m wingspan. The nesting birds include prions, petrels, skuas and endemic South Georgia Pipits and South Georgia Pintails. They have been saved from predatory rodents and now flourish in great numbers. The collective Islands of South Georgia are breeding sites for Southern Ocean species such as huge Southern Elephant Seals, Antarctic Fur Seals Leopard Seals and Weddell Seals. Five species of whales inhabit the surrounding waters, having returned after decades of absence due to overhunting.
